Black Horse
Tucked away on Illey Lane in Halesowen, Black Horse is that kind of pub-restaurant that makes you feel right at home the moment you walk in. Whether you're just passing through or you're a local craving a good pint and hearty meal, this spot delivers the kind of experience you end up recommending to friends.
The vibe here? Cozy, lively, and just the right amount of rustic charm. There’s a warm fireplace for those chilly UK evenings and outdoor seating for when the sun shows up (rare, but magical). Add in the fact that there’s bar games and big screens for watching the game, and you’ve got yourself a well-rounded venue for almost any occasion. Accessibility-wise, the entrance and restroom are wheelchair-friendly-though just a heads up, parking and seating inside might be a bit trickier for some.
Let’s talk food, because that’s what makes Black Horse shine. If you’re into classic British pub fare, you’re in luck. The Fish and Chips is crisped to perfection, and if you like something heavier, the Mega Mixed Grill is exactly what it sounds like-massive, meaty, and satisfying. For something indulgent, the Gammon Egg Chips & Peas brings comforting flavours you didn’t know you missed. Their All American burger comes stacked high with fries and cheese, while the Sirloin Steak is surprisingly well-prepared for a casual pub setting.
There’s also a thoughtful nod to those looking for healthier or plant-based options-like the Vegan Burger, fresh Baked Potato, or even the Mixed Grill Small if you want the pub experience without needing a nap afterwards.
And if you’re the type who can’t skip dessert? Two words: Chocolate Brownie. Add a scoop of ice cream and you’re in dessert heaven.
The drink menu at Black Horse deserves its own spotlight. Their beer selection is, simply put, excellent. Whether you’re sipping a cold pint of Stella Artois, relaxing with a glass of Guinness, or exploring a local cider, you won’t be disappointed. Not a beer person? They’ve got a great wine list, cocktails, hard liquor, and even tea and coffee options that go beyond basic.
This is the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time while chatting over drinks. And with offerings like Jerk Chicken and Chinese Pork Belly with Rice on the food menu, there's a surprisingly global twist to pair with your pint.
Black Horse isn’t trying to be everything to everyone, but somehow it pulls off a lot without feeling overdone. Coming solo? It’s relaxed enough for that. Meeting friends for dinner or lunch? There’s space for that too. Ordering in? Delivery and takeaway are both available, making it easy to enjoy their menu from the comfort of your own place.
It's especially great if you're after a quick bite that doesn’t feel rushed. Small plates, vegan dishes, and vegetarian options round out the menu well, giving it that all-day appeal whether you're looking to snack, graze, or feast.
Among restaurants in Halesowen, Black Horse manages to stay ahead thanks to its no-fuss, high-quality approach to food and drink. It's not just about filling seats-it’s about filling bellies and creating a space where people genuinely want to come back. While other pubs might fall short on either selection or atmosphere, this spot balances both without overcomplicating things.
Looking at nearby alternatives? Some places might offer similar dishes or drink lists, but few combine it all with the same character and consistency. Plus, those bar games and sport-friendly atmosphere give it a fun edge-ideal if you want more than just a meal.
For those who care about details, the location is easy to access, the service options are flexible, and the staff tends to keep things friendly without being overly formal. It’s got the kind of laid-back confidence that comes from doing things well without shouting about it.
And that’s what makes Black Horse one of those gems you remember long after the meal’s done.
Reviews
The pub offered the usual pub grub from a mainly similar menu on offer these days. Traditional meals, burgers & steaks. Prices are very reasonable compared to the bistro places. You can download the app & get offers sent to you. Service was efficient from going to the bar to place your order. The staff were very friendly & engaging. Desserts were large & very good value for money. There is a good selection of beers & the bar staff were quick to serve people.
A peaceful country pub that is cosy and offers great value food and drink. Staff were all friendly throughout. I would visit again.
